What is a truth commission?
Truth commissions are established tools to investigate human rights violations. In 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the right to the truth. It encourages countries to establish mechanisms, such as truth and reconciliation commissions, with the purpose of complementing existing legal systems with monitoring and reconciliation work after gross human rights violations have been committed.
A truth commission’s objectives may be formulated in different ways. The objectives of the Truth Commission for the Sami People are set out in the mandate under the terms of reference.
